TIPS & TRICKS ARCHIVE #3 – ePublisher Language Support

Posted on: October 6th, 2010

Did you know that ePublisher had some of the most flexible and customizable language handling capabilities of any publishing platform?

As well as ePublishers own extensible language support, the fact that the product is based on Microsoft’s .NET runtime means that we can also support localized sorting for any of the languages it supports.

Out of the box ePublisher supports the following languages:

  • English
  • German
  • Spanish
  • French
  • Italian
  • Japanese
  • Korean
  • Portuguese
  • Russian
  • Simplified Chinese
  • Traditional Chinese

To specify the output page and character encodings you require:

1.   On the PROJECT menu select the ACTIVE TARGET you want to specify the language for.

2.   On the TARGET menu, select TARGET SETTINGS

3.   Select the required language under the LOCALE setting.

Based on the locale selected ePublisher will invoke the correct locale specific search engine, insert localized navigation strings (TOC, Index, Previous, Next, Related Topics etc.), and apply a local specific index sort order.

ePublisher is not a translation tool, and it cannot translate content from one language into another. We assume that the input documents have been localized and are ready for publication.

It is possible  to publish in a language not supported by ePublisher out of the box, through some minor customization work. Many of our international partners have done work in this area to provide output to meet their specific regional needs.

UTF Support

Out of the box ePublisher supports UTF-8 charter encoding, UTF-16 support is possible with some minor customization work.
