TIPS & TRICKS ARCHIVE #1 – Migrating Content From RoboHelp to a Wiki via ePublisher.

Posted on: September 24th, 2010

Recently we have being hearing from a lot of customers and prospects asking about how they can use WebWorks ePublisher to migrate content they have authored in Adobe RoboHelp and publish it to a wiki, and specifically the Confluence Wiki.

Here are a couple of different approaches that we have investigated and recommended to date:

1.  For more recent RoboHelp projects (RH, 6 and above) – Use RoboHelp Export

With RoboHelp 8 Adobe extended the export functionality of RoboHelp so you can now export content from RoboHelp in a variety of formats including Microsoft Word (RTF as well as both .doc and .docx) plus FrameMaker files.

Either the Word or FrameMaker files could then be used as a input for ePublisher as normal.

This approach gives the following migration path.

RoboHelp – RTF (DOC) (FM) – ePublisher à Wiki

2.  For RH 5 and earlier projects, use the ePublisher RoboHelp Migration Utility

There is an optional RoboHelp Migration utility available for ePublisher. Once it is installed you can access the utility via the File > Migration > RoboHelp menu selection.

The utility allows you to specify:

  • The name of the RoboHelp project you want to migrate.
  • Output file name and path for the resulting  ePublisher project.
  • If you want to preserve the style names used in the original RoboHelp project.

Once the migration is completed and you have an ePublisher Project, you can now specify the desired wiki format (such as Confluence) as target by going to Project > Manage Targets > Add, give the new target a name such as “RH to Wiki” and select “Wiki – Confluence” from the drop down menu.

If you would like more information on the WebWorks RoboHelp Migration Utility, please contact your account manager.

If any members of the WebWorks community have developed any other approaches, we would be delighted to hear about them.
