I have been playing around with a ton of new and not that new ways to include video, slides, and graphics into online content. Many sites that host video, slides and even photos have cool little things that allow you to embed. What is embed? It is a way to reference a hosted item (picture, video, slides, and more) into a web site or blog.

Now how can we do the same thing with our online content or online help? ePublisher has a feature that not many users know or understand – Pass Through. It was in our old product WebWorks Publisher and was migrated over to ePublisher and now we can really take advantage of it. Pass through is used in conditional text processing.

Here is how to use it in ePublisher

Post your video (YouTube, ScreenCast), photos (flickr, picasa), slides (SlideShare).

Copy the embedded information from YouTube, SlideShare, flickr, or any place that supplies embedded information.

Now place it in your FrameMaker, Word or DITA content make it conditional. In ePublisher (Target > Conditions) choose to show and check Pass Through for the embedded condition. Generate – as you view your online help or online content it will have the embedded content – piece of cake.

What is even cooler is if you change the slide or add videos it will automatically be updated in the delivered content because the delivered content is referencing the information and not part of the delivery. The dynamic delivery of content will be another blog entry and Webinar

If you want to see this with you own eyes go to our Webinar site and register for the Web 2.0 and ePublisher webinar.
