Embed and Pass Through
February 25th, 2009 by Andrew VanConas
I have been playing around with a ton of new and not that new ways to include video, slides, and graphics into online content. Many sites that host video, slides and even photos have cool little things that allow you to embed. What is embed? It is a way to reference a hosted item (picture, video, slides, and more) into a web site or blog.
Now how can we do the same thing with our online content or online help? ePublisher has a feature that not many users know or understand – Pass Through. It was in our old product WebWorks Publisher and was migrated over to ePublisher and now we can really take advantage of it. Pass through is used in conditional text processing.
Here is how to use it in ePublisher
- Post your video (YouTube, ScreenCast), photos (flickr, picasa), slides (SlideShare).
- Copy the embedded information from YouTube, SlideShare, flickr, or any place that supplies embedded information.
- Now place it in your FrameMaker, Word or DITA content make it conditional. In ePublisher (Target > Conditions) choose to show and check Pass Through for the embedded condition. Generate – as you view your online help or online content it will have the embedded content – piece of cake.
What is even cooler is if you change the slide or add videos it will automatically be updated in the delivered content because the delivered content is referencing the information and not part of the delivery. The dynamic delivery of content will be another blog entry and Webinar
If you want to see this with you own eyes go to our Webinar site and register for the Web 2.0 and ePublisher webinar.

WebWorks.com Office
January 9th, 2009 by Andrew VanConasFor many years WebWorks customers have asked me about the Austin office. How big is the office? What is it like? Do you like it? Where is it located? Now, I do not work in the Austin office because I am lucky enough to work out of my house in lovely Ventura, CA. So I get to travel to Austin quite a bit – around 6 times a year – I have work for WebWorks for over 8 1/2 years – so lets say 50 trips. I enjoy Austin, especially the live music and great BBQ which I try not to miss on each trip. Although this week was a TexMex feast.
We recently updated our offices and it looks great!! The WW colors are on display throughout the office including in the kitchen floor! We have a great play area where Jesse rules the Ping Pong table . So here you go a look inside WebWorks.com you may even see some WW employees.
Enjoy and Happy New Year.
Recorded Webinars Available
December 2nd, 2008 by Andrew VanConasAs you may know we record most if not all of our webinars. We used these recordings to help understand how you are using ePublisher and to share with our overseas customers that can not attend a live webinar due to time zone constrains.
We have made a few of our webinars available for either download or online viewing this is an excellent way for our webinar attendees to review the webinar. To view the recorded webinars go to our WebEx site http://webworks.webex.com and click on View Event Recordings on the upper right. You can then register and view the webinars.
Yesterday’s webinar on ePublisher Overrides is an excellent source for our more experienced users and was expertly led by our Dev Manager Ben Allums.
FYI: Since September we have over 275 customers have attendee our webinars! I will share the yearly Webinar numbers in a future post.
